Geometric Bang and the explosion of artistic freedom

Geometric Bang talks his art and inspiration on Wood'd Uncovered

Geometric Bang is exactly like ?

We always have been men of oppositions and contradictions. Delivering tech related products in warm and traditional materials, writing digital words in a room filled with books. Opposition, to us, can be the most inspiring thing. In music, design, art. Like Geometric Bang, street artist and illustrator from Florence. Geometric, as the strictness of straight lines and flat colors, and Bang as the wreck from the grid. And this is exactly what his drawings express. Geometric Bang writes on walls as if he was using a software, uses a software as it was a wall. So we warmly welcome Geometric to the Design Stories column, which will tell the work, inspirations and uniquenesses of our favorite Italian artists. So, take a break, read the interview and have a look at the ? Geometric dropped at the end. Cheers!

Geometric Bang, for those who don’t know your work. Who are you?
I am Mattia, stage name Geometric Bang. Born in 1984, raised in Lodi, based in Florence. My dedication to art started with graffiti around ’98/99, a big step in my path, and then moved to illustration and graphic design. Two different disciplines that had a huge impact on me.

And how would you describe your work?

The “everyday” is what inspire me, I am big collector of moments and frames happening around me. My work evolved into simplicity, my drawing are straight and easy to understand. Although they always have deeper meanings hiding somewhere. Everybody can see different things, not necessarily the “right” thing, I mean, but it’s okay to me. It’s interpretation.

We love to find out about artist’s routine. What about yours?
I awake up early in the morning, I love taking my time while doing breakfast and smoking a couple of cigarettes. I start working and I never stop before late afternoon. An then everyday I go for a walk or a bike ride, I am definitely a bike lover!

Do you have any technique you prefer? How’s your typical workspace?
My workspace always changes, and it depends on the kind of work I have to do. My favorite one remains the streets, when spray and walls replace pens and paper. If I have to work on illustrations, otherwise, I have my room and studio. Where I have enough space to work on canvas as well as computer. Of all the tools I use my favorite one is still paint spray, but of course I do not dislike computer and graphics tablet. Lately I also started tattooing. It’s a new thing to me but I’m getting so much into it, thanks to a tattoo artist and close friend of mine, Alessio Errante. He’s like a master to me, and thanks to him  I hope I can learn a lot from this experience.

Where you draw your main inspirations from?
As I was saying, I am inspired by everything’s around me. From people to nature, from objects to books. I am also strongly inspired by the old-school tattoo scene, I love the characters and the meaning you can find in them. In my artistic route I’ve encountered tons of contemporary artists, from street-art to illustration. Sharing experiences with them was and still is a chance to open my mind. The I have the big names from the past, they all come from different discipline. But what I’ve learned from them is the attitude, the approach to art and drawing. Most of all Matisse and Bruno Munari, two huge sources of inspiration.
